Kris Nauwelaerts

Kris Nauwelaerts illustrated numerous magazines and books for children before teaching Illustrative Design at Mad-Faculty. He is most experienced in the making of picture books.

For many years he accompanied workshops for children encouraging their imagination and drawing skills. Due to this experience he started a PhD in Arts in order to describe the relation between picture books and the development of children’s visual (image based) literacy. The publication of two picture books, namely Prinses Anna (2010) and Op zoek naar mij (2013) constitutes an inherent part of the PhD-project.

He is participating in a cross-over research project: ‘taalCULTuur’. This project aims to design a toolbox that supports and accelerates immigrant children to understand the language of instruction used at school in order to avoid a insuperable lag.

Expertise: visual grammar, visual narratives, image-word interaction, development and artistic significance of children’s drawings, aesthetic experience.
